Do you know how International Women’s Day originated and what gifts can delight the woman of your heart?

Let’s pay tribute to women on March 8 – International Women’s Day

IWD: a powerful holiday of the gentler half of humanity

International Women’s Day – pay tribute to the women around you with a bouquet and a small gift for

moments of relaxation

March 8 has traditionally been associated with the celebration of International Women’s Day. A holiday that was

discredited during communism still carries a strong message of women’s struggle for equal rights and

recognition, as well as equal opportunities between men and women.

A holiday with more than 100 years of tradition

On March 8, 1908, a large demonstration took place in New York, attended by as many as 40 000 seamstresses.

They protested against poor working conditions, called for the abolition of the 10-hour

working day and demanded higher wages, as after women began entering the capitalist

workforce, men often saw them as unskilled and cheap labor that could be easily

exploited. The United Nations (UN) established International Women’s Day

as a global holiday in honor of this difficult and long struggle for equality on March 8.

Women first celebrated it in Switzerland, Austria-Hungary and Germany in 1911,

and in the modern history of Slovaks it first appeared during the Czechoslovak Republic in 1921.

After that it was celebrated only intermittently; after the rise of communism in 1945,

communists claimed ownership of the holiday, and thanks to their attempts to exploit it,

IWD (and carnations) became an empty symbol that women were no longer eager to celebrate.

After the Velvet Revolution, IWD began to be celebrated again and although it has a “near competitor”

– Mother’s Day – it is becoming increasingly popular. While Mother’s Day

(celebrated on the second Sunday of May, this year on May 9) celebrates motherhood,

International Women’s Day pays tribute to all brave and strong women, including those without children.

It is an expression of respect, admiration and love for women striving to develop themselves without

forgetting to care for the needs of their loved ones (partners and children), while still using

their talents, abilities and determination to make the world a better place to live.

Although the situation has improved significantly over the past century, women have gained the right to vote,

the opportunity to participate not only in family and household life but also in professional and public life.

They have become more emancipated and have freed themselves from social expectations of where their place

should be. Nevertheless, equality between men and women still sometimes falls short.

If we compared the salaries of women and men in the same positions in companies,

or the representation of women in prestigious public positions, the numbers would probably

still favor men more than women.

Despite this, women do not give up their struggle and continue to send a clear message that

they can handle multitasking – managing children and households while also being successful.

Not only as hairdressers, shop assistants or teachers, but also as scientists, artists, politicians

and top managers. Men, on the other hand, are increasingly open in expressing appreciation

and want to sincerely delight women – with words, a bouquet, chocolates or a thoughtful gift

that says: “thank you and I respect your strength as a woman.”
