How does a wireless charger work?
Wireless chargers operate using the principle of inductive energy transfer. Inside the base is a coil that generates an electromagnetic field. When you place a smartphone that supports wireless charging (Qi standard) on it, energy starts transferring automatically without needing a physical cable connection. The phone doesn't need to be perfectly centered, but for optimal results, its charging coil should align with the one in the charger. Charging starts immediately and automatically stops or slows down once the battery is full to prevent overcharging.
Some models can even charge through thin cases (up to 3–5 mm), so you don’t have to remove the phone from its case. The charging speed depends on the output power—typically 5 W, 7.5 W, or 10 W—and the device’s compatibility.
Advantages and disadvantages of wireless charging
Using a wireless charger reduces mechanical wear on your smartphone’s charging port—there's no need to plug or unplug cables. Charging is simple and convenient—just place your phone on the pad or stand. This solution is especially practical for nightstands or desks where the phone is frequently handled. Here are more pros and cons of wireless charging:
Advantages
- Just place the phone on the pad—no cable needed
- Reduces wear on the charging port
- Elegant and practical for work desks or bedside tables
- Selected models allow charging multiple devices at once (e.g., phone + earbuds)
Disadvantages
- The phone is harder to use while charging
- Charging is usually slower than via a cable
- Not all devices support the Qi standard
- More sensitive to precise placement of the device
